TJ Owens

TJ started art instruction at the age of five: being told to “stay within the lines” and to “stop outlining” the porky pigs and rabbits especially with contrasting colors!” Something he’s ignored ever since. After completing a “tour” in the US Army, TJ settled in northern California obtaining his BA in Art Education and his MA in Counseling/Psychology. Later, he completed his PhD in Psychology and Public Health/Education. (However, don’t call him Doctor, he prefers TJ) Although TJs figurative works are a bit “edgy” and may be experienced as somewhat provocative raw exaggerations with intense bold colors; his landscapes are more traditional, with even a certain naïveté, much like abstracted colorist compositions in the expressionist style. TJs inspiration is intuitive…reflections of his location in time and space…particularly time he spends in the South of France. There he lives in his Villa Sauvé for half the year, with the influence of Provence intensely reflected in his work.

I've been contracting for 30 years, specializing in various wall finishes, such as wallcovering faux finishes and straight away painting. Being in the trades for so many years I've worked in all sorts of situations and in some beautiful places. In 2003 my working partner and I took on a project on the Big Island of Hawaii. We learned that lots were very inexpensive, depending where you chose to buy, and decided to build a house there. Spending so much time on the island it drew my attention to the extreme beauty of the nature of a place. Most of the time working you tend to focus on whats right in front of you. After witnessing all the islands have to offer I couldn't help but to try and capture some of the moments with paint. After starting these new painting projects I've looked a lot closer at everything in every place I go, maybe it's because I'm a little older and have developed a little more patients, I'm dedicating this website to images I've experienced and will continue to look closer at everything that comes my way.
